I. Why ReignCom?

The reason that we selected ReignCom as our subject for analysis is because the company is an excellent example of how an organization can take steps in changing its structure to overcome poor progress.

Surely ReignCom had good times and its success story was a famous one in the industry. Things turned bad for the company within few years, with the advent of strong rivals both in the domestic and global market. This sudden change of environment led to depressing loss in sales and measures to save the crisis-stricken company seemed inevitable, especially in terms of structure. The corporation altered several parts of its organizational structure in hope of bringing back things back to normal.

II. Company Introduction

ReignCom was established January 1999 as ReignCom Co., Ltd. in Korea by a Duk Jun Yang and his colleague executives from Samsung Electronics. Yang was a relatively young CEO born in 1951 who worked in Samsung Electronics for 20 years. ReignCom manufactures digital music (mp3) and CD players, portable gaming devices, electronic dictionaries, and other digital entertainment devices. The company is best known by its iriver brand.
iriver - ReignCom's iriver subsidiary and brand markets digital music and video players in Asia, Europe, and North America. Its line of digital music players includes both hard drive and flash memory-based devices. iriver is the virtual cashcow for ReignCom.

A nearly unique feature of the newer iriver players is the direct MP3-recording capability with selectable bitrate of internal (FM, microphone) and external (line) sources.
