The Gates of Hell
By hearing the word “gate” you may remind yourselves of Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise. It is known that Rodin benchmarked the Gate of Paradise in his earlier concepts. Later he was inspired and influenced by the composition and the layout of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, a masterpiece by Michelangelo. There are the hints of influence from both masters as Rodin’s gate lack compartments/separation (influence of Michelangelo), while the individual sense of despair in isolation and separation (of a modern man) is evident.

Now I am about to tell you the background of the making of this piece of sculpture. To keep a very long story short, Rodin was asked to make an entrance for Decoratives Arts Museum, with the subject matter for him to decide. This museum was never built, but Rodin did not cease to make this gate (he was greatly interested in Dante and this commission only ignited his zeal to make a sculpture related to his poems). He went on to make the gate, adding figures and taking off a few, and recomposing them. He worked on The Gates of Hell for approximately 40 years, until his death. You will gradually come to know while you are visiting our exhibition - Rodin is a milestone in the history of art, and especially in sculpting. The Gates of Hell is a special sculpture, (even to Rodin as you can guess) and Rodin always kept this piece by his side, showed and asked opinions to his fellow artists. [Rodin, 예술의 숲]
