■ Empowerment?
The empowerment of a person or group of people is the process of giving them power and status in a particular situation (From Collins dictionary®)
The definition of Empowerment by GSK.(GlaxoSmithkline Plc. Pharmaceutical company)
1. Empowerment is a decision making by experts regardless of employee’s level.
2. Giving a right to hands-on workers to make their own decision and support it steadily.
3. It is okay that they made wrong answer if they have honest attitude.
4. Knowing what company needs.
5. There is an excuse for mistake or error if you get something from that failure.
“In Berkshire Hathaway, we have 3,3000 workers but only twelve associates work in head office.”
■■ Why it fails easily?
Nowadays, empowerment is necessary for each group. But theory and reality are different. Here is some causes for Failure of Empowerment.
1. Red tape. (Still remains in many people’s mind)
2. Employees just care their safety when their manager is a buck passer.
3. Lack of employees’ skill and ability.
1. A definite suggestion about vision and rules.
2. Create positive atmosphere and culture for organization.
3. Make culture which is not afraid to fail.
4. Help employees to make active attitude and thinking.
5. Decide rewards and punishments with fairness.
