a. Sungnyemun fire Case
February 11, 2008, Koreans witnessed in shock the transformation of one of the country's best-known landmarks which guarded the capital for 600 years into a pile of smoldering ashes in the span of just a few hours. A 70-year-old man angry over a compensation payment for his house had set fire to Sungnyemun Korea's National Treasure No. 1.Seventy percent of the structure dating back to the Joseon Dynasty had vanished in the flames.
Police could examine CCTV footage from cameras near the gate so had been able to identify a suspect entering the structure.
b. Kang Ho-sun Case
"Kang Ho-sun" was convicted of kidnapping and killing eight women between 2006 and 2008, and of burning to death his wife and mother-in-law in 2005. Kang, 38, was arrested in January over the murder of a female college student, and later confessed to killing and secretly burying seven other women.
According to police, surveillance cameras played a decisive role in tracking down self-confessed serial killer Kang Ho-sun. We have constructed expected routes that the missing woman could have taken and tracked 7,000 cars that moved along the routes using closed-circuit TV television recordings. This led to Kang’s arrest.
