What is motivation?
The process that account for an individual’s intensity,
direction, and persistence.
Three key elements
Intensity
Direction
Persistence
Woman are more motivated to get along,
Men are more motivated to get ahead.
Men were more motivated by agentic strivings
And Women by communal strivings
The drive to excel, to achieve in relation to a set of standards, to strive to succeed
The need to make others behave in a way in which they would not have behaved otherwise
The desire for friendly and close interpersonal relationships
But, the relationship between goals and performance will depend on:
Goal commitment
“I want to do it & I can do it”
Task characteristics (simple, well-learned)
National culture
