1)서술기법
-연대기적 순서에 따른 사건의 전개가 아닌 복잡한 시간 구성
→Tristram의 잉태로부터 이야기가 시작되지만 제3권의 끝장 가까이에서야 겨우 주인공 탄생

->작가는 일탈을 독서의 생명이고 영혼이라고 칭하며 그것 없이는 춥기만 한 겨울만 남는다고 말하며 이야기에 있어서 일탈의 중요성에 대해서 역설. 계속되는 작가의 연상과 이 일탈로 인해 이야기는 열려 있는 채로 유동적이고 유연한 방식으로 이야기를 진행시키는데, 이는 앞에서 제시한 이 소설의 특이한 서술 기법을 탄생시키는 주요 동력.
