Politeness :
-Socially prescribed rules
-Shows awareness of social customs
-indicates social relationships
■ Symmetrical Vous : politeness
■ Symmetrical Tu : intimacy, solidarity
■ Asymmetrical Tu/Vous : inequality in power
Tu is initiated by the superior in the relationship
■ Mutual TLN : inequality in status, unfamiliarity
■ Mutual FN: equality, intimacy
■ Asymmetrical TLN/FN: inequality in power
FN is initiated by the superior in the relationship
Cultures have different ways of expressing politeness:
-United States : Positive/Negative Face
-Korea : Honorifics
-conveying subservience
-endangering dignity
-communicating inattentiveness or guilt by averting the eyes
-the most popular nonverbal behavior of politeness
Other honorific non-verbal practices
-Receiving with both hands
-Empty hand supporting the other hand
