1. Narrating the Nation : An Imagined Community

National cultures are composed not only of cultural institutions, but of symbols and representations.
민족 문화는 문화 제도와 상징과 재현들로 구성되어 있다.

A national culture is a discourseㅡa way of constructing meanings which influences and organizes both our actions and our conception of ourselves.
민족 문화는 담론 - 우리의 행동과 우리 자신을 보는 관점에 영향을 미치고 그것들의 짜임새를 만들어 내는 의미들 - 이 구성되는 방식이다.

National cultures construct identities by producing meanings about "the nation" with which we can identify; these are contained in the stories which are told about it, memories which connect its present with its past, and images which are constructed of it.
민족 문화는 우리가 동일화할 수 있는 ‘민족’에 대한 의미를 생산하면서 정체성을 구성한다. 그리고 이 의미는 민족에 대한 이야기들, 그 현재를 과거와 연결시켜주는 기억들, 그리고 그것으로 구성되는 이미지들 속에 담겨 있다.

As Benedict Anderson has argued, national identity is an "imagined community."

Anderson argues that the differences between nations lie in the different ways in which they are imagined.
앤더슨은 민족들 간의 차이는 그것이 상상되는 방식의 차이에서 비롯된다고 주장한다.

Or, as Enoch Powell put it, "the life of nations no less than that of men is lived largely in the imagination."

But how is the modern nation imagined? What representational strategies are deployed to construct our common-sense views of national belonging or identity?
