The dock prostitute Murono gimi(室君)
During the time of ancient era, middle ages, and to the modern time, it was always clear that prostitutes were in the crowded streets where many people come and go. Often times they also were in the ferries, stations, shrine and posts where Buddhist temple was. Unlike them, Murono gimi were the prostitutes who lived near by the ‘Muros’ wharf of Harima province. They were the female shaman who worshiped Muro(むろ) by keeping time to the music and dancing with the piping people.
By the time when ships drop the anchor and stayed near the wharf, there were many prostitutes who accompanied with travelers. According to 『토좌일기(土左日記)』, one rich man who traveled on the ocean was once bored to stay in his little ship. For some rest he went to Muro wharf to have some time with the prostitutes and ended up living in Muro. As his story was heard, many women began to work as prostitute near wharf and the prostitution near wharf came into fashion. Their job was to comfort the shipman as they waited on a small boat until ships with lonely men enter the port. When big ships arrive, the small boat with prostitutes would approach and the whoremonger would send prostitutes to them. This kind of ship prostitution continued until Edo era. The prostitutes of middle ages were only seen as the servants for man’s sex.
Momoyama, the bathhouse prostitutes
Momoyama was the respected prostitutes of bathhouses according the record of ‘The period of north and south dynasties (1336~1392)’. In the book called ‘Kyung-jang experience’ following statement was said.
“By that time, the one who were not familiar with bathhouses could not talk or open their eyes due to the heat coming out of hot bath. Many enjoyed warm bath by closing the entrance of the bathhouse. Nowadays, there are many bathhouses in cities and 20 to 30 glamorous prostitutes would comb my hair and scrub of my dirt.”
