본문내용
Show how the assumption that the bracketed PP is a Complement in (1) but an Adjunct in (2) would account for following contrasts (assuming the grammaticality judgments given):
(3) (a)*The discussion of the match was more animated than the one of the riots.
(b) The discussion at the match was more animated than the one in the bar.
(a) is ungrammatical because 'one' in this sentence has the Noun status. When the head noun has its complement, it has the Noun status. However, 'one' proforms only the N-bar. However, (b) is grammatical because [at the match] is an Adjunct. When the head noun has its Adjunct, it has the N-bar status. Therefore, it can be proformed by 'one'. Thus, (a) is ungrammatical whereas (b) is grammatical.
(4) (a) The discussion of the riots and of their implications was full and frank.
(b) The discussion at the match and in the bar was full and frank.
(c) *The discussion of the riots and in the bar was full and frank.
Only constituents attached at the same level can be coordinated. Adjunct cannot be coordinated with a Complement since Complements are attached at the N level, whereas Adjuncts are attached at the N-bar level. Therefore, the sentence (a) is grammatical because [of the riots] and [of their implication] are both Complements. Both of them are attached at the N level. Also, the sentence (b) is grammatical because [at the match] and [in the bar] are Adjuncts. Both of them are attached at the N-bar level. However, the sentence (c) is ungrammatical because [of the riots] is a Complement, whereas [in the bar] is an Adjunct. The former PP is attached at the N level, but the latter PP is attached at the N-bar level.
