Some sample results obtained from playing the Beer game
This graphs are some sample results obtained from playing the Beer game. As you see, some section of the graph is below zero. It means that people demands, but the beer is out of stock. This result shows that it is very hard to forecast people's demands. and you can see It is more hard to forecast people's demands as go upstream.
This phenomenon is so-called bull-whip effect.
Bull-whip effect
The bull-whip effect is so called because its shape of fluctuation resembles a waving bull-whip.
The uncertainty of demands becomes large as it go upstream. Manufacturer doesn't want their products out of stock, so they make products more than they forecast. And then, unnecessary products are stacked in the warehouse. This means waste of resources and of course, waste of money to the factory.
How can we solve this nettlesome problem? I will suggest the solution in the next slide.
SCI background & importance
In the old days, individual business functions were tasked with specific but limited duties. For example, R&D was tasked with innovating. Quality managers had to eliminate defects. Operations need to be lean. Logistics have to be responsive. And depending on the company, one department or another was responsible for making a profit.
