Current market condition of the mobile phone and mobile OS
The growth of mobile phone market is closely related with the mobile OS market because the mobile OS market, which is in a form of two-side market, is a platform between the hardware makers and the consumers. Two-sided market is market in which one or multiple platforms enable two user groups to interact. Network effect is an important concept in understanding two-sided market; the number of users on both sides of the platform is dependent upon that of each other’s.
The mobile OS market is an example of multi-homing structure with multiple platforms. Between mobile handset makers and customers, there are several mobile OS’s including Apple's iOS, Google's Android and others. Devices can receive multiple OS updates over its lifetime once OS’s are installed.
The mobile OS market share has changed significantly. In 2006, Symbian had the majority of the market because Nokia was the number one cellular phone company. However market shares of iOS and Android increased over time. [Figure1] [Figure2]
