1. Background
Carrefour, an international retailerheadquartered in France, opened its first store in 1960. Carrefour means ‘cross roads’ in French and the group was the first to open a hypermarket in Europe. Carrefour operates in five types of stores (hypermarkets, supermarkets, hard discount stores, cash-and-carry stores, and convenience stores) of which hypermarkets account for the largest portion of its sales. With more than 470,000 employees by 2010, its stores generate about 60 percent of their sales on food and the rest on non-food items. Carrefour is the second largest retailer worldwide and the third largest in profit following Wal-Mart and Tesco. It is considered one of the world’s most global retailers, operating in various countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. (Refer to Appendix A)
2. Hypermarket Industry
A hypermarket is mammoth commercial establishment, including a supermarket and a department store. Hypermarkets require expansive retail facilities and carry wide range of products from grocery products to general merchandise in large volume. The average supermarket might take up 40,000 square feet but a hypermarket may cover anywhere from 150,000 to 330,000 square feet.Due to its size, hypermarkets are located in suburban areas surrounded by about 500,000 households within a 20-minute drive. For these consumers, hypermarkets can provide all the necessary shopping in one car trip. As a result, hypermarkets generally have business models that focus on high-volume, low-margin sales.
Carrefour invented the first hypermarket in the 1960s and various US hypermarket chains followed suit in the 1980s. The industry has been expanding ever since, with major retailers such as Carrefour, Wal-Mart, and Tesco gaining strong positions in each of its home markets. Carrefour’s hypermarket business in France was a great success with 218 stores operatingin France by 2006. Wal-Mart and Tesco are each the largest retailers in the US and UK. With home markets saturated, major retailers are pursuing global expansion for further growth.
