He has a lot of occupations like these. He looks very wealthy doesn’t he? However, he wasn’t rich. Wasn’t he a good author? No, he was a great author.
All of you may be once heard of his work, moby-dick. Today, when we talk about the american literature, we couldn’t ignore the influence of his work. His works have a great power. For example, Everybody knows the starbucks, right? In moby-dick, the chief mate whose name is starbucks likes coffee very much. Coffee brand name, Starbucks originated from the novel moby-dick. However at that time the moby-dick was too social critic to gain the popularity. Like moby-dick, Most his works were not loved by the public at that time. So his family had a lot of debt. He suffered from this. and to make matters worse, unsold his books were burned. Maybe you can feel his miserable life. And~ He was a friend with Nathaniel Hawthorne.
And I’m going to tell his works in relation to popularity. You can see the his popularty at a glance.
At first, he was an pretty popular author. In 19th centuries, an adventure novel was popular. He worked with taking various of ships. So his work that has his real experience was very popular. After he read many philosophy books, he added philosophical content in adventure novel. However the readers who expect the typical adventure novel, they disappointed. After this failure, he wrote the red burn and white jack to pay his debt. Although these works make him popular again but he was sad. The books he wanted to write couldn’t be loved by the public. He said like this. It was not art but just two works. After publishing some adventure novels, I think he maybe have a another hope. He wanted to make a mighty literature. He just became friends with nathaniel Hawthorne. It makes malvillle inspirable than ever before. So he could finish the moby-dick.
However, the work was severely criticized. Besides, Hawthorne also turned his face away thought melville respected him. Maybe he hurted because he said that I respect the hawthorne, and want to devote this to him. And these expriences complished the bartleby.
