I. Introduction about the Carrefour
The Carrefour group has grown to become world’s second largest group, and the first group in EU at the distribution area. The firm composes of six store formats: hypermarkets, supermarkets, hard discount, convenience store and on-line store. In 2006 Carrefour derived 47.67% of its sales in France, its home country. In the same year, Hypermarket made 49% sales of Carrefour in the store format aspect at EU include France. There are 29 countries to enter, 43,600persons at this firm, and 12,000 stores in the whole world.
II. Main international site selection factors of Carrefour
In order to understand accurately about Carrefour, we have to know its main international site selection strategy. One of the important factors helping Carrefour’s international expansion is countries’ economic evolution. This strategy, which applicants advance to China and Brazil market, guides to get more market share in each of country.
The other factor is the ability to find a perfect partner familiar with local operating needs until its own management learned local operation thoroughly. For example, Carrefour has made a contract with Maus, the Switzerland firm, and other firms like groups in Taiwan, Turkey and China.
Also Carrefour regards as if a country location within a country can make enough additional store expansion to have economies of scale in buying and distribution.
