33. Major conflicts both past and present:
Three coups happened in Fiji. These conflicts symbolizes the unstable state of Fiji. Ethnic issues between the two major groups(indigenous Fijians, and those of Indian descent) are the source of most of the conflicts of Fiji. In the past, since Fiji was ruled by the Britain, and this led to greater ethnic issues. The ethnic divide between the governing indigenous Fijian-based Duavata ni Lewenivanua (SDL) and the Indo-Fijian-based Fiji Labor Party (FLP) remained a recognized obstacle to long-term political stability, and ethnic discrimination remained a serious problem. On several occasions, Members of Parliament (M.P.s) made racist remarks about Indo-Fijians. In both the past and the present, ethnic issues and coups are the major conflicts throughout the Fiji’s history.
