4.Who is Elishama?
- In the sixties of the last century, there lived a very rich merchant whose name was Mr. Clay.
- He likes his clerk Elishama to read the company’s accounts to him at night for relaxation.
- Mr. Clay recalled a true story he heard when he was twenty years old. It is about a rich man who paid a poor sailor 5 guineas to impregnate his beautiful young wife. Elishama says that’s a popular old sailor’s legendary tale only.
- Mr. Clay wants to make the story the real thing, so Elishama is dispatched to find a sailor and a young woman who will play the part of Clay’s wife.
- The destitute sailor named Paul is discovered on the street and recruited.
- Elishama goes to inform Mr. Clay about what took place, but discovers the old merchant has died.
Elishama is a Mr. Clay’s clerk.
- He doesn’t have any kind of desire, but he has a talent to incite people to come true their desires.
He likes to have become an indispensable person of Mr. Clay’s life, and also he prepared the whole setting for the play.
The people in this story made their own story through Mr. Clay's plan
and they called it a reality.
Reality and Fantasy are bound up with each other that
it is very hard to distinguish the one from the other.
My Real Story
The immortal story is what some people experienced and is kept in mind forever like the sailor’s real meeting which he said he would remember in his mind forever.
