ISD란 과학적 지식과 경험, 다양한 매체를 체계적으로 활용해 효과적, 효율적, 매력적인 교수를 만드는 과정이다.
ISD는 학습에 대한 요구 분석, 설계, 개발, 수행, 평가의 과정을 거치면서 교수의 대상, 내용, 시간, 장소, 방법 등을 결정할 수 있는 확고한 근거를 제시한다.
