Contemporary dance, characterized by its unconstrained
movement and modernity was created in 20th century.
Based on anti-dance, the contemporary dance itself is a
spirit, philosophy and idea.
Upon those features, pioneers of the contemporary
dance had inspiration.
Using their personal idea background, they had
developed contemporary dance under the system of
artistic form and composition.
Therefore, we are going to research on following 5
representative contemporary dance pioneers and seek
for lessons from them.
Ⅰ. Loie Fuller (1862 - 1928)

- Loie Fuller was playing with a scarf.
Then She realized that the ripples of the scarf
was changing as she moved. From this she
created serpentine dance.
- By using electric illumination, she brought
up the image of snake meandering.

-Cofound the Denishawn dance company with Ted
Shawn which helped the growth and development of
American comtemporary dance.
Denis had preference for Oriental images. With her
Strong individuality and allurement, she provided the
audience with mysticism topic. In addition, exotic and
fancy act uplifted the audience's mind. Her act actually
presented the audiences with pleasure.
She usually danced Christian religious dance which
was against heathenish oriental dance.
- Latter years, she was praised as the most beloved dancer.
