While-reading activities Scanning the text and find the details from the given text - PW
*This activity aims at students’ finding information from the reading text
T: “Okay, everyone. We are going to learn two different expressions in the textbook. Take out your textbook. Look at page p.38-40. This text is about useful expressions ‘Achilles’ heel.’ and ‘Pandora’s box’, coming from Myths. These reading texts explain the background and the meaning of these expressions.
*Then, teachers give direction about what to do with it.
T: So, what we are going to do is to read the two different texts quickly, and also fill in the box in each worksheet. While you do this activity, you can also share the answers with your partner. After you read the two texts, you can learn two specific expressions more deeply. Find the information which you need, while reading the two texts, and share the answer with your partner. Ok, Let's start.”
*Students spend a few minutes finding the answer to the questions in the worksheet.
T: “Okay, time’s up. Do you need more time? Ok. The first text is about ‘Chocolate is Joannes Achilles’ heel’. What did you think the meaning of the expression before you read? And did you find the answer after you read? Let’s share some of your brilliant ideas. If you know the answer, please speak loudly.
T: What is Achilles’ father’s name?
S: Peleus,
T: Yes, his name was Peleus. Look at the page 38, line 2. You can find his name, and also find that he was a human being. What was Achilles’ mother’s name?
S: Thetis. And she is a goddess.
T: Yes, her name was Thetis and she was goddess, although his husband was a human being. So, which one do you think Achilles would be, human being or god? Yes, he was half human and half god. Ok, next….
