1. Introduction

In 2006, ‘Times’, a world renowned magazine, chose ‘You’ as its person of the year. It stated that ‘You’ surpassed all other forms of media and created a new framework of democracy. ‘You’ do not just accept the news itself from the media but also creates their own news. This ‘You’ can be referred to the creators and users of UCCs. ‘You’, chosen as the person of the year by Time, proves that UCC trends and its influences are recognized worldwide. With a quick development of Internet, Web 2.0 was prospected as the core of Internet development and will affect Internet culture substantially. With this Web 2.0, UCC was introduced and it has become the predominant part of Internet culture nowadays. We are sure that most people are familiar with the term UCC. However, most of them do not know how UCC is related to Web 2.0 and how UCC and Web 2.0 were developed to become the hearts of Internet culture.

This essay is about Web 2.0 and UCC. In the essay, we will be looking at the characteristics of Web 2.0 and how it was developed to become the Web 2.0 that we know of today. Then the meaning and characteristics of UCC will be discussed followed by the development process of UCC and its technical characteristics. In addition, we have examined examples that look very popular for the Web 2.0 and UCC. Moreover, in each section, we have added our thoughts and ideas on Web 2.0 and UCC; and finally came up with our own conclusion and summarization.

2. Web 2.0

(1) Introduction and Characteristics of Web 2.0

There are number of sentences defining Web 2.0 and through the research we came up with the best definition. “Web 2.0 is the term given to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online. Web 2.0 basically refers to the transition from static HTML Web pages to a more dynamic Web that is more organized and is based on serving Web applications to users. Other improved functionality of Web 2.0 includes open communication with an emphasis on Web-based communities of users, and more open sharing of information. Over time Web 2.0 has been used more as a marketing term than a computer-science-based term. Blogs, wikis, and Web services are all seen as components of Web 2.0.” It was 2004 when Web 2.0 became so popular. The persisted ideas of Web 2.0 characteristics from O’Reilly Media, Inc at that time were differentiated into seven general ideas: Web 2.0 is service supplier, able to control data sources, requires user participation, accounts collective intelligence, based on long tale, do not discriminate platform and finally very important in user’s experiences.

The definition of Web 2.0 and the time of proposal are very clear. However, it is very difficult and complex when it reaches different characteristics. Moreover, lots of people have heard about Web 2.0, however, they hardly answer what Web 2.0 is. This happens because Web 2.0 is not a differentiated technology therefore, people may consider in many various notion of their own. Under the various ideas of Web 2.0, there are three different point of view considering Web 2.0.

First of all, in a standpoint of technical aspect, people think Web 2.0 as emerging model from server-client mode. The major connection system between computers, server-client model, is in charge of today’s internet network. Client can be applied as requiring file or information while server is answering the searched information. However, Web 2.0 is totally a different model in terms of consider client and server as producer and customer. Secondly, many afford a term as Web 2.0 by comparing Web 1.0.The distinguished characteristic of these two is the positiveness of information sharing. The bottom table shows the major difference in terms of dimensions.

Web 1.0 Division Web 2.0
Portal base Web Service Platform based Web
Information/Contents Lockout Information/Contents Information/Contents sharing
Technology: efficiency of sharing Value Sharing: seek diversity participation by using collective intelligence
Internet Explorer: High OS reliance Browser All programs of web connection
Expert, Programmer, related company Manufacturer Network users centralizing individual

As the table indicates the major concept of Web 2.0 is requiring participation, sharing and openness. Moreover, Web 2.0 also inquires human’s collective intelligence while Web 1.0 values efficiency of sharing. The biggest advantage of Web 2.0 will be the users who are centralized as individual. Thirdly, Web 2.0 contains a different principal of economy from the previous business concept. This idea has been first presented by Chris Anderson at 2004 as ‘long-tail rule’. This idea was that it is not the 20% of major profit making employees who brings benefit to the company, but 80% of employees who strive to leads and accomplish development. In addition, it indi
